"Sign of the Times" is a song by Harry Styles, released as the debut single from his debut solo album, Harry Styles, on April 7, 2017.

Writing and subject Edit

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Harry stated, "'Sign of the Times' came from 'This isn't the first time we've been in a hard time, and it's not going to be the last time.'"[1]

In the same interview, he explained the meaning of the lyrics: "The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there's a complication. The mother is told, 'The child is fine, but you're not going to make it.' The mother has five minutes to tell the child, 'Go forth and conquer.'"[1]

Production Edit

The song initially began as a seven minute voice note on Harry's phone.[1]

During the production of the album, the track was a breakthrough for Harry and the band, and Harry even expressed a wish to name the album Sign of the Times.[1]

Composition Edit

Cameron Crowe, Rolling Stone: "a sweeping piano ballad, as well as a kind of call to arms."[1]
